South Kintyre

Campbeltown is the main town in the south end of the Kintyre peninsula. South Kintyre Parishes cover the area from Carradale to Southend.

There are unique benefits to living in the area. We are surrounded by beautiful scenery with fantastic coasts, sandy beaches and bays, hills, forests and lochs and very friendly, kind people and tempered weather due to the Gulf Stream. We even have palm trees!

We have 4 primary schools; 2 in Campbeltown,1 in Carradale and 1 in Drumlemble (a rural school near Campbeltown). Campbeltown Grammar School is the Secondary School , serving the whole of South Kintyre.

Further education is provided by Argyll College in Campbeltown who are linked with the University of the Highlands and Islands.

Campbeltown has a health centre with attached local hospital. A 24 hour service is provided with access to tertiary care in Glasgow via air or road ambulance transfer for emergencies. Carradale and Southend have local surgeries both with GP cover: out of hours care is in Campbeltown.

There are two main supermarkets in the town with a variety of individual shops to cover most needs. The villages of Carradale and Southend each have a shop to cater for basic household requirements.

We have a local police station, community centre, library, swimming pool and leisure centre.

Throughout the south Kintyre area we can boast several tearooms, cafes and hotels. The area is well covered with letting accommodation. Carradale, Peninver, Machrihanish and Southend all have camping and caravan sites.

Water sports feature highly in Kintyre as some of the best surfing areas in mainland Scotland are to be found here. There is a superb yachting marina in the town and a local sailing club.

Carradale has a most attractive harbour which, in its heyday, had a large fishing fleet. Southend has the famous St Columba’s footsteps and an annual conventicle is held at the site in June.

The two villages have well appointed halls which are well used and are a bonus in engendering close community relationships and welfare.

Travel to and from Glasgow and beyond, is by road by private or public transport. Approximate driving time by car is 3 hours. By bus, 4 hours. Bus service has 5 daily runs. The local airport has regular twice daily flights, Monday to Friday, and flight time is approximately 30 minutes. There is a seasonal ferry from Campbeltown to Ardrossan via Calmac. Likewise Kintyre Express run a seasonal service to Ballycastle in Northern Ireland.

Fishing, farming, whisky and gin industries and musical heritage make the area well known throughout Scotland and beyond.

We are fortunate to have the oldest cinema in Scotland which has recently been refurbished to a very high standard and it is well supported by locals and holidaymakers.

Recreational pursuits are wide and varied. We have golf courses at Carradale, Southend and Machrihanish. Campbeltown hosts the Mull of Kintyre run in May which is very popular and has the accolade of being the UK’s top race in Runners World magazine. There are cycling trails and walking routes in the town and countryside. A variety of sports, indoor and outdoor, are available e.g. football, rugby, tennis, badminton, archery, cricket, bowls, sailing club etc. For the younger members of the community (and young at heart) there is a skateboard park and a number of play parks. There is an angling club too.

We have a very successful schools pipe band and brass band, local choirs and drama groups. There are local beaver, cubs and scouts and rainbows, brownies and guides groups.

This is a marvellous area to live and work in where the community looks out for each other and support one another in times of need and happiness.
